Quirky Engineer & the Hot VC Take on Desi Aunties

TLDR: Quick read if you’re looking for a light hearted beach read.

Summary: Imagine being fed up with Desi aunties trying to set you up with a potential husband. Now multiply that by aunties sneaking up with a suitor at your work conferences. That’s what Daisy was up against.

Then – cue dramatic music – a blast from her past – the hot gora venture capitalist – enters the picture and what ensues is something only bollywood movies are made of.

Super corny romcom that has loads of drama, cheesy moments that would never happen, and sex scenes to make any aunty squeal – this book is a good beach read and one that got me out of a reading funk.

Thoughts (with Spoilers):

Loved how the aunties called Liam, Limb or Lemon – my dad would do the same shit. Loved the accuracies from how closely intertwined South Asians are – how a relative or someone in the community will see you doing something and the whole community will know the next day to how being 27 and unmarried in the desi community is the end of the world for a woman (eeek I’m past my prime, aunties – oh no!).

All of that resonated with me minus having a high school crush make a resurgence, come up with a wild plan to get married so he can claim a distillery in his inheritance on the condition he marries. The high school crush, Liam, is a player and doesn’t ever plan to marry but the main character, Daisy, just happens to be the one to change him – makes him realize that he wants to marry and be with her. The me who loves reading romcoms, was into that – the cynic in me was like WTF – girl he ghosted you for a decade and now is creeping back into your life, what makes you think he won’t do it again? Yeah, yeah books need happy endings. If you’re a realist, this definitely isn’t for you – the story is just too absurd but if you’re a hopeless romantic, definitely give it a go!
